What is fucoidan and what benefits does it give to the body’s cells and systems?
This video covers Fucoidan, a protective compound in seaweed, and how it benefits cellular health, sirtuin (SIRT 6 and SIRT1) activation, and anti-aging.
So, what is fucoidan? Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide molecule extracted from the cell wall of different species of brown seaweed that protects the seaweed from the harsh environment of the ocean.
Fucoidan protects seaweed against external stresses like salt, wind, ultraviolet radiation, and other harsh elements. These same properties in fucoidan that protect seaweed have also been used throughout history to protect the human body. For many years, people have consumed fucoidan-rich seaweed in Okinawa, Hawaii, and Tonga – all places that have been recognized for their health and longevity.

Health Benefits
Some of Fucoidan’s most astounding benefits are its regenerative and protective properties that are crucial for cellular health and anti-aging.
Fucoidan’s regenerative and restorative properties help cells in both plants and animals expel toxins, reproduce, and repair themselves. By restoring and reinforcing the body’s cells, Fucoidan supports normal liver function, a healthy immune system, metabolism, circulatory function, stable neurological systems, energy production, and digestive health.
Our metabolism slows down as the cells’ intake of nutrients slows, and this can impact weight levels and glucose levels. As cells age, they also become more fragile, negatively affecting our immune system, as illness and disease can have a much more catastrophic impact. Cellular waste removal also becomes less efficient with age. For this reason, the liver can become less efficient at removing toxins over time. Fucoidan helps mobilize and regenerate all the cells responsible for these functions. However, it also combats aging by activating sirtuins, which are proteins that regulate cellular health.
There are seven sirtuins, named SIRT1 through SIRT7. Sirtuin 6, or SIRT6, is specifically a longevity-promoting protein, and is activated by Fucoidan. SIRT6 is involved in cellular homeostasis, DNA repair, and telomere stability. An increase in SIRT6 is directly correlated with an increase in longevity, and a deficit in SIRT6 is associated with faster aging. Sirtuin 1, or SIRT1, is also associated with aging and protection against disease and harsh elements, and is activated by fucoidan.
Fucoidan supports:
- Immune, circulatory, and neurological systems
- Encourages a healthy digestive tract
- Promotes normal cellular metabolism
- Supports normal liver function
- Can have a positive effect on mood, focus, and clarity
Our favorite fucoidan supplement:
Luckily, you don’t have to travel to Japan to find fucoidan. Our fucoidan supplement is Sisel’s Fucoydon, which contains all eight fucoidan molecules. We harvest fucoidan from Limu Moui seaweed and developed a process to sulfonate all eight molecules and pack them into one powerful supplement.
