Do natural cleaners actually work as well as chemical cleaners?

In this video, we test the effectiveness of natural home cleaners vs. name-brand chemical cleaners on different types of common household materials to see how the natural cleaner performs.

Many people assume that there is a trade-off between effective cleaning and safety, and that you can’t have one without compromising on the other. So, we put this idea to the test and see if the natural cleaner can keep up with or even outperform the name-brand cleaner.

Natural cleaners contain non-toxic ingredients that are safe to use in your home with children and pets around, while most name-brand chemical cleaners use bleach, ammonium, and many other harsh toxins that can be harmful for humans and animals. In this product test, we’ll see if the natural cleaning product can not only clean as well as the name-brand cleaner, but also sanitize. Sanitization kills harmful microorganisms and germs that can deal the most damage to our homes and bodies.

The chemical cleaners we use are three different popular name brands. One is a multipurpose household cleaner, one is a common bleach cleaner, and the other is a popular window cleaner. All three of these cleaners contain harsh chemicals.

Watch out for the following harsh toxins in your household cleaners:

  • Bleach
  • Ammonia
  • Hexoxyethanol
  • Sodium Hydroxide
  • Phthalates
  • Triclosan
  • Chlorine

These chemicals can have the following negative effects:

Bleach – Bleach is a powerful cleaner, but when mixed with limonene (a common citrus compound found in other cleaners), it can create dangerous smog-like particles. Cleaning products that contain chlorine and bleach can release chloroform and carbon tetrachloride, other dangerous chemicals that may be carcinogenic. Regular exposure to some of these compounds has also been correlated with heart and lung diseases.

Ammonia – Contact with ammonia-based industrial cleaners can cause severe burns to the skin and permanent eye damage. Ingesting ammonia-based cleaners can create severe injury to the gastrointestinal tract (mouth, throat, and stomach), as well.

Hexoxyethanol – Hexoxyethanol has been known to cause skin burns, severe eye damage, respiratory tract irritation, and even kidney injury.

Sodium Hydroxide – This is an extremely toxic chemical – it is corrosive to all body tissues, and cause severe damage to the eyes and respiratory system. Ingesting sodium hydroxide can result in organ failure, internal damage, and even death.

Phthalates – These are chemicals that can be found in a variety of plastics, containers, packaging, foods, and personal care items. They are a group of chemicals, and three phthalates (BBP, DBP, and DEHP) are banned from children’s products, while DINP can be carcinogenic, and DiDP can irritate eyes and skin.

Triclosan – Triclosan is an antibacterial compound that has been linked to negative health effects in humans, such as skin irritation and allergic reactions. Triclosan can disrupt the body’s endocrine system, impacting hormone regulation, and can combine with other chemicals to create carcinogenic compounds.

Chlorine – Inhalation of chlorine can lead irritation of the eyes, skin, and airway. It can also cause additional damage to the cardiovascular system.

Our favorite natural cleaner:

The natural home cleaner we will use is called Sisel Strong. It is a multipurpose household cleaner that uses Essential Oils, D-Limonene, Isopropyl Alcohol, and Chlorine Dioxide, which both clean and sanitize but are also safe, non-toxic, and kill pathogens without presenting harm to humans. It is commonly used as a natural home, window, bathroom, and kitchen cleaner, as well as degreaser. Sisel Strong is a great natural alternative to name brand chemical cleaners and, as you can see in the video, performs just as well as the name brand chemical cleaners we put it up against.
